Heavy Metal Islam, Work-in-progress / presentation: Mark Levine

Tis 17 nov kl 20:00, Panora - FRI ENTRÉ

Directed by Jed Rothstein. Produced by Moxie Firecracker & Bonne Pioche Films.

Welcome to Heavy Metal Islam. Taking the audience into hidden worlds very few in the West even know about, the film travels from the embattled slums of Peshawar, to the penthouses of jailed dissidents in Cairo, to underground gatherings in Iran. Clerics rail against heavy metal as Satanic. Governments ban it, sending metalheads to jail.

Yet, deep in the forgotten underbelly of globalization, we watch as bands and fans risk everything for this fierce, powerful music, bending it to a new reality and making it their own. For them, heavy metal is an outlet for their anger, a defiance of their disenfranchisement, and most of all, a testament to their hope for the future.

Mark LeVine, author of the book HEAVY METAL ISLAM and participant in the upcoming documentary will present the project through film clips and further discuss the evolving movement of Heavy Metal in the Muslim World.
